Rick's second paper was recently accepted and published in Chemistry of Materials. In this paper, we report the synthesis and structural evolution of crystalline hybrid Cu(I) and Ag(I) iodides templated by chiral R/S-β-methylphenethylammonium (β-MPEA) and its achiral analog phenethylammonium (PEA). Introducing the β-MPEA cation drives a dramatic structural shift, from one-dimensional metal-iodide chains to isolated M₂I₆ dimers, through steric effects from the methyl group. This change not only alters dimensionality but also transfers chirality from the organic cations to the inorganic framework, producing measurable chiroptical activity. We further show that alloying Cu and Ag tunes both bandgaps and chiroptical responses, offering a pathway to low-dimensional, chiral hybrid materials with tunable optoelectronic properties.

Read all about it here. Great work, Rick!
